Prototaxites were enigmatic organisms that lived 400 million years ago and grew up to 26 feet high. They would have towered above vascular plants, which only reached a height of about 2 feet. They have recently been classified as a type of fungi and no-one really knows how they lived or looked. I have shown them towering above the little Rhynia plants.
